No.  "die Kiste" means box - in the sense of a packing crate.  My
Schoeffler-Weis offers an alternative translation into the American
familiar of jalopy.  "die alte Kiste" - the old crate - is
disparaging, but just "die Kiste" is merely dismissive.  I've heard
Germans use it frequently about their company cars even when they
were new.  Remember - I used to be a car pool manager over there.

A coffin is "der Sarg", leading to the slang word for cigarettes -
Sargnageln, or coffin nails.

Another word sometimes use - especially about larger cars - is "der
Schlitten" - the sledge.
