inoperative cruise control and more

Thanks to all who replied my inquiry regarding the '91
80q. Unfortunately the story worsens: Not only is the
cruise dead, but a steady stream of SMOKE (and the
smell of burning electronics) poured from the right
side of the steering column after the wipers were
engaged (they and everything else worked fine although
I quickly cut them off-  the smoke stopped). Anyone
experienced this/care to guess what is causing this
and what the cure would be?
