'93CS100 Erratic Coolant Temp

...along with satisfying a long awaited dream of mine, it seems I may have
inherited a few problems with my recent purchase. Perhaps one of you could
help.
My coolant temp some days rises normally, but then drops off to nothing (and
stays there), and on other days does not rise at all. Occasionally, I can
detect a slight smell of coolant, and although I'm a new audi owner (leaving
little for me to compare with), I'm thinking the engine is getting too hot
too fast. (However oil temp appears never to exceed 100C). On one occasion,
heater was blowing hot hot air (regardless of setting), on one other
occasion (not heat at all).
I'm thinking it might be a faulty thermostat, which leads me to my next
question. Where is the water pump located? At first glance, it seems to be
on the accessory 'chain', but somebody mentioned it may be on the timing
'chain'. Could belt slippage be a factor here? I am desperately seeking to
purchase a maintenance manual for my car (but not quite ready to drop $450
Cdn, and the electronic version won't be out till middle of Dec.)
Thanks,
Andre
