Steering Damper

There is a VW steering damper that can serve as a perfect replacement
for a LOT of Audis.

Just from my check in the "family album", it replaces the damper on the
B4 (90series), the V8, and the 100/A6(V6 version).

The VW part number is: 305 425 021 2

Audi list price is around $87
VW list price is $55
The Parts Connection list price is $12

There was some question if this was a direct replacement. Well, the only
difference in the part numbers between VW and Audi are the first three
and the last digit. So what, you may think, it could still be a
different part.

Well it's not. I ordered the VW part from Rod @ The Part Connection and
replaced it over the weekend. Had to press out a threaded bushing from
the old and put it in the new, but that was easy with some sockets and a
vise. Compared the two dampers side by side and the VW part is exactly
the same. The only real difference I could see is that the "bulb" at the
one end is a little bigger on the new part, which could be a simple
result of "better" engineering. Otherwise, compression and extension
dimensions were the same.

The amazing part is that it only took me one hour to R&R the part. Let
me tell you, that V6 engine compartment on a 90 series it tight! And
there are some sharp edges in there too.
