The bottom of the door is filled with extremely gooey stuff.  You can
safely leave the dropped screw where it is and get another from a
junkyard.  It won't rattle or move about.  You sometimes find the
most amazing things in the bottom of doors.

Not as good as under the driver's side carpet in an ur-quattro, though.

Latest find - live .22 hollowpoint ammunition.  You could get five years
for possession over here.
