Almost correct. The decision to build the RS2 was clearly finished, but since
it was introduced so close to the end of the 80 series, and the A4 only months
away, the Avant body was chosen as the A4 Avant was still 1+ years away. And
the RS2 as a coupe? Nah, that wouldnt be to cool, there are a lot of 315 hp
coupes around, Audi needed something different (just like the Urq was
different in 1980) so it would really sell like hot cakes.
And finally, one can say that Audi really did Porsche a favour, as they lost
the contract to build the E500 for Mercedes.
