Martin, no need to feel bad about this one ... I'd bet rust had
weakened your fuel line. I just replaced the supply line in my '87
4kcsq after it started leaking under similar circumstances. I pulled
the original out and found a couple additional spots where it snapped
with a little encouragement. The fuel line retaining clips under the
car obviously encourage external rust on the line -- those where the
points where the line was at its weakest.
A new line was about $50 from Carlsen Audi. And replacement wasn't
that tough, although a lift seems necessary to feed the line through
the engine bay.
