breather hose replacement

What is the general consensus on replacing breather hoses?  OEM Audi
parts are not readily available around here and I was in a pinch a while
ago with a seriously split hose that had to be done.  I replaced it with
heater hose which of course normally carries water.  I am having second
thoughts about this because I wonder if the oil vapors have any
detrimental effect and eat the hose from the inside?  Mind you, the
original hose was quite decrepit on the inside so maybe it wouldn't
matter.  Anybody with knowledge of this?

For the record, I replaced all the hoses going from the fuel
distributor, put a new tee in at the valve cover and replaced the hose
going to the crankcase.
