Sorry to hear, I lost my '86 & '87 synchros that way, 200k on each.  It took 
a while to get my new(er) quattro to a reliable state, but it's finally a 
much better car than the synchros were.  After the last incident, I talked 
the adjuster up a bit by showing ads for more than his estimated value.  
That may be harder now, as sychro ads are getting scarce.  I also got 
reimbursed for recent repairs I had reciepts for, quite a bit of $.  That 
was with USAA insurance.  Good luck with insurance and the new(er) quattro.
