Went through the exact same thing in my 1990Avant.  Tried the usual,
repositioning the blades-this only made them jump up when shut off, even
pulled the unit out and tried to re-align stops in motor, no use.  Change
the whole wiper assembly solved the problem.

The GOOD news is that, although they look very different, the assembly from
the early type 44's fits perfectly in the later type 44's (tubular design
like yours).  I had one I pulled from a junker 1985 5KS and it works just
fine.
