Hi all:
The blower in my TQW is toast, so this morning I started pulling the blower
out of my parts car per the directions in
http://www.audifans.com/archives/1997/08/msg02239.html by Al Powell, Frank
Bauer and Eric Fletcher. Gentlemen, thank you for posting this, the blower
plenum came up 3 inches just like you said it would.
However, the blower in the parts car is _apparently_ the original blower
motor as well - nuts, I coulda sworn it had been replaced by the PO. The
brushes are almost completely gone and it appears that the armature (or
whatever that copper clad thingie is that the brushes ride on) is worn away
at least a couple of thousandths. But there is no play in the bearings
either laterally or axially.
My dumb question: am I being pennywise and $ foolish to see if the motor can
be reused by just renewing the brushes at an auto electric shop? Or should
I just "pay the man" and get a new one for $100. Anybody running a
re-brushed blower motor? Remember, this is my el cheapo back up till I can
save my pennies for a clutch for the sedan.
This humble cheapskate, er, frugal Audi driver awaits your advice.
