And the survey says...

No BTDT, Steve, but how much do you value your labor? New brushes in an
old motor will probably extend its life. As long as a totally new
motor? Dunno, but it would seem likely that the old motor might not last
as long as a new one.

Sure - you can renew them. Expect that you'll have to replace it within a
year
tho. The bushings wear out about the same time...

Steve: the biggest thing to think about is that if the bushings that the
armature shaft spins on wear or the commutator wears quickly after the brush
replacement, the armature can bind against the field magnets or the brushes
causing an increase in current flow to the blower motor and potentially
cause a fire.
<Tom, I thought you only hung out at alt.autos.audi, good to see you here>
So I WOULD be pound foolish to re-do the old one, it seems. The more I
think about it, the original one held up for 13 years, so the cost of the
new one divided by the expected life span is cheaper than rebuild now and
replace in a year.
Thanks to all who replied, without this forum I would be bankrupt!
