Another alternative (did this last weekend). Go to Pep Boys and buy a split
boot (model 3601) for $20. Cut off the old one, repack the joint with good
grease and apply the split boot (uses little bolts to hold the joint
together). Works find so far. Saved me half a day of fussing. Of course,
this only works if you are reasonably sure that the joint hasn't been
contaminated by debris while the boot has been deteriorating.

I am need to replace the boot on the outer left front cv joint. I guess the

easiest way to do that is to take the axle shaft off and do the repair off
the car. The Bentley says the procedure is:

1. With the car on the ground, loosen the 32mm axle nut, and wheel lug
bolts.
2. Jack up car and remove the axle nut and wheel.
3. Remove the triple square nuts holding the inboard end of the axle shaft
to the transmission. Move axle back.
4. Press outboard end of axle out of the wheel hub.

Is that all there is? That doesn't sound too hard. Is this something the
average home shade tree mechanic can do? Is the press something that is
readily available?
