'87 4000 Quattro CLUNK!

Since my last post, I have spent at least 8 hours under my 4000 trying
to figure out what is causing the rear end clunk. I was wrong about
one thing in my previous post. Even though the differential mounts
looked good while inspected in their installed locations, one was
actually slightly bad. I took them both off and one had a separated
rubber to metal interface (1 of 4 on the mount was bad). I replaced
both mounts with new ones. The clunk has not changed at all.

I also had a friend repeatedly cause the clunk while I looked under the
car. Everything I saw moved in a controlled and damped manner,
inconsistent with the clunk sound.

I have not given up. Every effect has a cause, right?
