Having lust done everything but the axle R & R here's my 0.02. Using the
directions you outlined in your message move step 4 between steps 2 and 3.
After you press out the axle if need be you can remove the whole strut
housing to get it out of the way. I think that it is easier to press out the
axle before removing the axle from the tranny. You need to remove the tie
rod and ball joint to let the strut housing swing out of the way. Get an
alignment after your all done is not a bad idea.

Tools I used and are recommend by me (YMMV):
a three foot breaker bar to get the axle nut off (depending on your girth it
may need to be longer)
a three claw gear puller to press out the axle (about $12.00 at an auto
parts store)
PB blaster once or twice a day for a few days before starting the job.

Hope this helps,

I am need to replace the boot on the outer left front cv joint. I guess the

easiest way to do that is to take the axle shaft off and do the repair off
the car. The Bentley says the procedure is:

1. With the car on the ground, loosen the 32mm axle nut, and wheel lug
bolts.
2. Jack up car and remove the axle nut and wheel.
3. Remove the triple square nuts holding the inboard end of the axle shaft
to the transmission. Move axle back.
4. Press outboard end of axle out of the wheel hub.

Is that all there is? That doesn't sound too hard. Is this something the
average home shade tree mechanic can do? Is the press something that is
readily available?
