85 5000S temp gauge.help

Can someone tell me where the tempature gauge gets it's signal from.  The
only diagrams I have are for a 86 5kcstq.  They show it comming from the
multi-funciton temp sensor.  I think that is wrong for the 85 but have no
way to verify it.  I think that it comes from a sensor located in the head.
Can someone tell me it that is right or not.  My gauge is not working and I
think that it is the cause of a problem in the the HVAC.  It will not blow
hot air out of the floor vents, but all else seems to work fine.  Any ideas
or suggestions?
