Ok, reading some other responses I expect to get jumped on for this
assertion- so let me explain further:

The entire point of forced induction is to increase the mass flow through
the motor.  If you burn more kg/s of fuel, you get more power, it's that
simple.

A supercharger (or electric compressor driven by the alternator) draws
horsepower to increase this mass flow- they are essentially powered by the
crankshaft.

A turbocharger harnesses waste heat in the *current* mass flow to get
*more* mass flow. So, the turbo essentially powers itself.

As a matter of fact- if you could tap the turbo shaft to drive things
instead of the crankshaft you wouldn't need the engine at all. (Jet
Power!)
