Type 44 Fuel Pumps

I had the pump die on my '86 5kt the other day. I ordered another one and went to change it yesterday. Things went about as well as they can with a full fuel tank. I got the old unit out and started to swap the connectors over when I noticed that the lugs on the new pump were too large for the wire connectors. I compared the part numbers (they both start with 0) and my pump ends in 016, and the new one ends in 023 (I'm pretty sure anyway).
I just got off the phone with the supplier and he shows the same pump from at least '85 to '88, so it doesn't look like it was a mid-year change or anything silly like that. He thought that there may have been an update kit at one point, and Bosch assumes that they've all been changed over so they provide a pump for the updated version.
Has anyone run into this before? What should I do? Should I just increase the size of the connectors and source some nuts or what?
Thanks for any help.
