We have an old ur-quattro (1981) in the shop at present.  I casually
checked the handbook yesterday - it specifically states that wood or
rubber protection must be used if the car is lifted on the seam by
anything other than the on-board jack.

It also warns IN THICK BLOCK LETTERS that serious damage will result
if the car is lifted by any suspension component, including the
subframe.
