87 5KTQW injector cooling fan problem

Correct. I know that the sensor is working perfectly, since I had bought a
brand new one from my dealer (proper obescience to the Audi gods). Also, it
turns on and off only when the car is well heated up. Disconnecting the wire
(spade lug) from the sensor keeps the fan from ever coming on, thus we know
that the wire itself is not shorted to ground somewhere before it reaches
mr. sensor. Avi, you misunderstood. The fan is not on all the time. It's
only on when the engine is up to temperature. But my understanding is that
this circuit shouldn't be active unless the ignition is off. Am I mistaken?

What I don't understand is why the circuit would keep on working when I
remove the afterrun relay. Doesn't the the hot side come through this relay?
If not, what function does it perform in the circuit?

You meant _rear (flywheel end)_ of the engine, right Avi? The sensor is
close to/under the area near the ISV. It is a single spade style sensor. The
bracket the sensor is screwed into is attached by several of the cam cover
nuts.
