Weird Plug problem on 12v v6

I pulled the #1 plug from my '95 90q today. It gave
resistance for most of the way out. When I finally removed
the plug, there was a small o-ring sitting in the well.
Almost small enough to fall in (ouch) but not quite. I
gingerly reached in with a bent wire and hooked it. Any
ideas what it was doing there? It was damaged, crimped on
one side, as if it has been threaded in with the plug. I
haven't seen an o-ring like this on this engine yet. Weird.

One other thing: Any hints for cleaning out the area around
the plugs? it's damned filthy in there, and I want to change
plugs without getting any of that crap into the engine, or
stuck under a plug. Thanks.
