Lifter Noise on '95 90

Hello again!,
My '95 90 has just started having an intermittent problem
with lifter chatter. The car has a bit of hard time starting
(sometimes) and this is then (sometimes) accompanied by a
bad lifter chatter. The chatter is accompanied by loss of
power, white smoke out the tailpipe and stall on idle.
"Check engine" light then comes on. Seems like it is running
too rich? This problem is intermittent, though, and most
times, the car runs just great. I did find some rotted
vacuum lines yesterday, and replaced all the lines today.
Spark plugs and wires look ok. I recently cleaned the air
plenum and ISV. It's really a vexing problem, as I have
recently replaced both O2 sensors, and the machine is
(usually) running better than ever. I guess this is part of
the endearing charm of Audi, eh?
