I replaced my much loved 16V Jetta with a 1987 200 Quattro Avant as I needed
it to tow a large trailer. The Jetta probably does about 8.5s to 60. Totally
subjectively, the two cars feel about the same in terms of acceleration. The
Jetta is probably quicker from a dead stop as it is much lighter and I have
never been prepared to dole out the same abuse to the Quattro that I used to
give the Jetta in deference to the age of the clutch. However, when we get
rolling then the torque that it is available from a blown motor, say 3rd/4th
gear is an absolute joy - makes the 16V seem like a complete buzz-box. Does
anyone have any torque plots for these motors - I would be interested in
seeing how they compared with much bigger normally aspirated motors, say
3500 or thereabouts?
If I could afford to get some proper suspension on the 200 it would make a
fabulous Q-car - plenty of traction, excellent brakes and enough go to make
some far more modern cars look quite silly.
