87 5000S misses & smokes..

Actually, I had this same problem with a previous car. At random points in
time, it would just start smoking and running like crap. This was just
after I got the car, btw. My solution was to spray a bunch of carb-cleaner
type stuff(except meant for fuel injection) into the intake track right
behind the air filter while the engine was running. My thinking was that
the air-metering device used on these cars was sticking, or giving a bad
reading. So, after this, the car ran like complete crap for about 3 days.
After this, it ran perfectly until I sold it. I dont know if it was just a
problem having to do with the vehicle not being used regularly for a long
time, or if I actually solved the problem, but it worked for me.

Have a '87 5000SQ... (172,000 miles) 5 speed
Cold compression is around 190 lbs & varies 7 lbs accross the 5
cylinders...
New Audi plug wires & plugs...
Car will start & run fine most of time...
If it sets a couple of days it will start OK but have a bad miss & smoke
like crazy (did this morning on me)
Trying to sell the car but seems to go crazy each time I fix another
problem...
I have replaced the fuel pump & it is OK....
Any suggestions in what to look for..???______
Many thanks in advance...
