Is Jetta 1.8t the same engine as the A4 1.8t?

Drive by wire means that your accelerator pedal is no longer connected
directly (mechanically) to the engine's throttle valve. The pedal is
only an input to the ECU, which then drives the throttle electronically
under software control. Drive by wire significantly simplifies the throttle
mechanism (no need for separate valves for idle stabilization/compensation,
no need for separate linkages for cruise control, no need for throttle valve
dashpots, etc). Less components means less things to malfunction (don't
need to spray carb cleaner into ISVs o these cars!). Also, this provides a
way for the ECU to override pedal input, so that more effective traction
control and electronic stability systems can be implemented. Of course,
there is the question of (what if the ECU fails or has bugs in the software).
Valid questions, but so far I have not heard any reports of errand
throttle action as a result of these.

Theoretically, yes. But due to the engine mounting orientation differences,
the TAP kit for an Audi (which includes exhaust components) is not going
to fit the longitudinal engine'd VWs. Also, not sure if TAP has such kits
for the drive by wire cars yet. That said, there are lots of other hop-up
kits out there made for the VW 1.8Ts specifically. A 300+ HP FWD VW is going
to be a handful, though. Better to do that sort of mod on a quattro.
