Why does everyone seem to hate drive-by-wire?

I have to say, I've driven the A6 now for a while, and the drive-by-wire
system in the car gives it a very pleasant split personality. Go easy, and
it drives like your normal family car; step into it, and hold onto your
neck. I'm not sure I'd like the car nearly as much if it was "always on"
like my Firebird was. I'm sure I will _seriously_ appreciate it come winter
time...
