Just got a quote from the Audi dealer to replace the evaporator: $2000. As far
as knowing how it fails, I was told that they charge the system, crank it up, and
put a refrigerant tester at the center vent discharge into the passenger
compartment. When the tester activates its signal, they know there is a leak in
the evaporator. And it could be nothing more than a pin-hole in a solder weld.
Apparently the evaporator is the only thing inside the passenger compartment, so
if the tester senses refrigerant, the diagnosis is made. This seems logical. I
just wish it wasn't buried beneath the entire dash requiring removal.
