Hi!
You´re right Tom, but the critical points are not in the
front or end parts. Section that is the farest from the axles
( between them ) takes the great part of the bending load
and also where the hood/A-pillar and trunk/C-pillar meet.

More far from the B-pillar the A- and C-ones are, means
more twist or bend resistance, just in principle. When You
look at the side wiew of those two cars it´s easy to find out which
one is more resistant against bending. If the hatch wasn´t
so large or openable coupe would be more resistant against
twist too. In that part I guess they´re pretty equal? If You say
sedan, I wouldn`t dare to argue.

Putting a reinforcing bar between the rear strut moutings is
a good improvement for a coupe. Because there is no sedan
type bulkhead as You said Tom.

Another sake is; why the competitors ( NC, EC, etc ) mostly
choiced a coupe as a basement, when constructing an 89 type
car for rally, rallycross or -sprint purposes.

My best
