Widest possible tires on a TYP89 sedan?

I have a friend here in the UK who is purchasing 225/40/16 tyres to fit
to a type 89 Audi 90 20v quattro sport. These are being attached to 8"
wide 5 spoke ABT speedlines. They have already been checked for
clearance and fit with no problems. Offset of wheels was ET35 I
believe.
