4kq ISV problems

Let me know if you get your ISV problem figured out...
My car ('86) has been acting a bit funny lately.  Every once in a while, it surges
while driving.  If I push in the clutch, the "idle" jumps around between 1200-3500
rpm for a few seconds and then settles down to 900 rpm, at which point I let the
clutch out and continue on my way.  It has happened about four times in the last
week.
I'm getting the "dieseling" occasionally also.
I haven't done anything to diagnose the problem so far, save for making sure I can
find the ignition switch with my eyes closed :-)
