I think in this case 'platform' means frame. The Golf, Jetta, Beetle, and TT
are built on the "A4" frame (not to be confused with the Audi model), and
the A4, Passat, and A6 are built on the "B5" frame. Models on the "A4" frame
have Haldex AWD systems, and models built on the "B5" frame have Torsen AWD
systems (yes, including the Passat).
