Thanks to all who replied (and you know who you are :)).  I am inclined
to go with the bad batch of gas idea as the warning light is now
recurring frequently.  Unfortunately I just filled up (from virtually
empty) so will have to run it through the system.  

I will also have to learn about and investigate the knock sensing
system.
