Rather than strut bearings, they have a rubber bushing that lives inside a
cup, sort of like your shoulder or hip sockets. I'm told that the rubber
bushing can wear out or crack, causing thunking.

Sometimes when shocks get replaced, the spring is rotated outside its normal
'set' in the perch. I would remove it, disassemble, lube each end with
silicone. Every once in a while, it gets oriented upside down - not sure on
your model if it makes a difference...

there. Its definately in the upper portion the the shock assembly. let me

What kind of car? On 100/200/5000 quattros, most rear creaking comes from
the outer tie rod end, also known as the transverse link.

Rear Suspension clunking/grinding
Hi allOn the same note as previous post, the same car has aquired a noise
from the left rear shock, We replaced the rear shocks with bilsteins
(non-sport) about a year ago, and all-of-a-sudden there is a
creeking/grinding noise coming from the suspension. I took the wheel off
this afternoon, put the car on floor jacks and proceeded to jack the control
arm up and down. I determined the sound is coming from the upper area of the
shock assembly, hence the upper shock mount. It's black, square, and has 4
mounting bolts coming through from inside the trunk. Do these cars have
strut bearings like VW and BMW? I called the dealer and they didn't seem to
think so...What could be the cause of this ? Any help is greatly appreciated
!!!!
Thanks
Tim
