pulled codes, dead ecu?

Fellow listers, I pulled the codes today on my '89 200
which is currently suffering from an intermittent
no-start condition.
  First off, it *seemed* to me the computer would
provide a 1 before each code. . ?  Is this so?
  Because it seems I got a 12141, which of course is 5
digits and does not exist, but 2141 makes sense.  And
a 12144, which of course could be 2144.  Both of these
codes are knock sensor related.
  The third and final code was 1111.  Does this make
sense?  Would a "defective" ECU provide codes before
telling me it's dead?  I suppose this could explain an
intermittent no start. . ?
  This is an early '89 w/fuse on top of fuel pump
relay.  Where is the ECU located in this car?
