You are correct... you f---ed up big time. I would spray silicone on the
rubber now and hope for the best, but it may not help much. The lesson is
to >never< spray anything on rubber unless the label specifically states
it's safe to do so. I've been wanting to post a warning to the list about
this, but I'm not subscribed so can't post any messages. A lot of folks
carelessly suggest that lube and penetrant are the same thing. Petroleum
products will eat rubber, and most penetrants have a petroleum base. In
addition, some of these penetrants are very corrosive. I think some will
also corrode the metal over time. A big "no no" is using something like
Kroil on the E-brake levers of the rear brake calipers. Kroil's label
doesn't say what is in the can, and it doesn't say anything about using on
rubber either. Kroil will destroy the rubber seal on the e-brake lever and
you will have to replace the caliper for sure. ... BTDT on three cars (6
calipers).
