S6 - Front Outer CV Joint Circlip

The boot on one of the front outer CV joint boots is torn and requires 
replacement.  The procedure in Bentley seems simple enought (!) but I am 
confused about the circlip that retains the outer CV joint to the shaft. 

How does one remove that circlip before using the threaded shaft tool to 
press the joint off the shaft?? And how does one replace the circlip after 
the cv joint is hammered back onto the shaft?  Bently says (P T 40-9, [9]) 
the circlip is "not visible with CV joint installed".  If it is not visible, 
how do you remove/install it?

Perhaps this will be obvious when I have the axle assembly removed, but for 
now I am confused.  Any guidance will be most appreciated.
