AFAIK this was a posting to audifans ... not audiworld. AFAIK David's car
is a fairly stock '85 urquattro. Believe what you will, but I know I've had
a very similar experience with my stock '83 urquattro. I can't explain why
it is the case ... I drove a 5 liter 5-speed back in '86 before I found the
urq that I bought ... they certainly feel quick. OTOH I can also recount a
tale where I was embarassed by a VW ur-beetle (I didn't know we were racing
at first, but I was still unable to overtake him). Now, with the new turbo
and Schrappnell Knobben adding a couple PSI I doubt I'd have a problem ...
;-)
... to respond to the comment about toasting clutches ... I can't speak to
David's case, but in mine it was a stock launch ... and if nothing else, the
turbo lag actually helps ... the Mustang had me a little off the line (here
again, I didn't know we were racing! :)
... to respond to the comment about the quattro being made for off road ...
I think Audi's experience in SCCA Trans Am, IMSA GTO and various touring car
championships speaks to the contrary ... granted that the traction AWD
provides often is more of a hindrance in a quick jump off the line, but once
the engine comes on cam you can probably put more power to the ground ...
