Lazy clutch pedal return

The clutch pedal on my '93 90 has started getting lazy. Especially
after the car sits for a day or so, the first couple of times
the clutch is let out, the pedal lags noticeably in the last
couple of inches. Clutch (dis)engagement feels perfectly normal
otherwise; the "bite" point has not and does not change.

I'm sure this is a sign of something (probably not good) but
what? I'm hoping that it's simply a binding pivot in the pedal
assembly or a weak pedal return spring and not the hydraulics,
but this _is_ an Audi :-)

Any ideas?
