Fuel Pump sound? - 86 5KS

I stopped in the drive thru at lunch today.. and noticed, for lack of a 
better description, a sound from fuel pump area, that sounded just like my 
wiper motor when it's activated, *except* noticably louder, as I could hear 
it over the engine and exhaust.  When the car was moving again, it stopped.  
Must have been like this for 3-5 min.  When I stopped again, the noise was 
gone.  Telltale sign of a dying fuel pump?  I have never heard this before 
on any of my previous Audis.  Any ideas?
