Bosch or Pierburg fuel pump?

I don't know how helpful this will be, but I did install a Pierburg
replacement in my BiL's '84 5kS. The pump installed easily, and it was
interesting to see the instructions say that the new pump has no need for
the pressure damper on the outlet that is used to quiet down the Bosch pump.
The new pump was very quiet ... perhaps the most intriguing feature to me
was the fact that the new pump has a much larger screen than the old Bosch
pumps, which basically use the bottom face of the pump as a mount for the
screen.
After having dealt with the pumps on both his 5k's in the past couple months
I'm beginning to come to the impression that there are a lot of pumps that
are replaced prematurely because they have a clogged filter screen. I'm
thinking that of the pumps that do fail, a major contributor to the failure
is the fact that the pump has been having to work in the presence of a
clogged screen for an extended period. Rather than simply buying a new pump
as a matter of course I will begin by removing the screen on the existing
pump to see if it quiets things down suffucuently ... this worked like a
charm on my BiL's Avant.
HTH!
