New Guy- 4k/5k? Where do I start?

Greetings, all.  I'm a DSM driver, and I love my Talon to death, but it's
just too small to hold 2 car seats.  Kid #2 is on the way, so I'm looking
for a *cheap* AWD wagon.

The 200tq20v Avant is really cool, but out of my price range for now
(hopefully I can upgrade later..)  I'm probably looking for a mid 80s 4000
or 5000, I think.

SO:  What are the gotchas and good points of these, what should I look for
when shopping, can I *really* afford to maintain it, stuff like that...

I'm a pretty accomplished backyard mechanic with my Talon- so I should be
able to do most of the work myself- but parts are expensive, right?

Compared to a comparably priceds Subie, the Audis are bigger, older, and
*much* cooler, so I like that, but if it's going to be a lot harder to
maintain, I may have a problem...

What can you guys tell me?  Who's website should I be reading? Etc...
