New Guy- 4k/5k? Where do I start?

There are a couple of good sites. Start with these for the bigger cars
(aka Type 44, aka 5k's/200's):
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/ (where I got my ECU from)
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/9715/faq.html
For parts (just to get you started (I've had good luck with the first three
so far)):
http://www.audiquattroparts.com/
http://www.gprparts.com/
http://www.euroselect.com/
http://www.germanparts.com/
http://www.alleuro.com/index.htm
From these sites I'm sure you'll find all the links you'll need (about the
bigger cars)...

As for prices, I can't compare as I've only ever owned one other (non-Audi)
car, and that was a while ago. That said, some prices are wacky, but for
the most part I don't feel ripped off. Just don't ask my Dad about his V8q.
