Hmmm... the way I usually do it is to buy a neglected car then invest lot
of money to bring it to what I consider a fair running condition. When it
finally is ready to provide me with trouble-free service, I start feeling
this urge to own a bigger/faster/better equipped car, which is usually
slightly out of my price range, so the only way to afford it is to buy one
which has been neglected by the previous owner...

I must admit, the most reliable car I've experienced is my mother's '87
Volvo 760. Although it has 130k miles on it and has been through at least 2
accidents, it just runs and runs and feels like a new car. Mom has owned it
since over a year and it didn't need _any_ repairs except regular
maintenance yet. Pretty impressive.
