More airbag questions

What's the proper procedure, just out of curiosity?  I disconnected the
little red "disconnect this to disable the airbag" connector when I was
doing some work in the steering column once, and as soon as I plugged it
back in, the airbag light came on.  "Sporadic codes."  Same thing when I
disconnected the wires to the airbag light (obviously I reconnected
them; the bulb was being flaky).  ?
