Not difficult at all IMO/E ... actually easier in an Avant than a sedan.
Make sure the car has as little gas as you can feel comfortable having ...
definitely no more than 1/4 tank. First you remove the panel that covers
the floor of the rear area and the spare tire well. You will notice a
circular cover with 3 screws and a grommeted hole with a wiring harness
coming out of it ... this is the access panel. Once you remove this you
will see the top of the tank and the electrical & fuel lines going in and
out of the tank via the tank sender mount. Disconnect the fuel lines and
the electrical connector. You will see a hold down ring around the
periphery of the top of the sender, I use a screwdriver and a few light taps
with the heel of my hand to get it to come loose. When you raise the sender
mounting flange up a few inches you will see a fuel line hose clamped to the
bottom of the mounting flange ... loosen the clamp and remove the line. You
will now be able to remove the fuel sender ... note how it comes out so that
you can install it in the proper orientation and without damaging the arm.
Now you will be able to see inside the fuel tank. The pump is mounted on a
tripod of rubber mounts that press into place and have a plastic clip
holding them in place. One at a time go into the tank and push back the
retaining clip and pull that corner of the triangle up ... and repeat for
the other two clips. Now you can remove the pump ... you'll find the screen
at the bottom surface.

Putting everything back together is fairly easy ... just be sure that all
three of the rubber mounts on the pump are properly set over the pins and
the pump is pushed fully home in its mount ...
