So can it be fixed? Would replace the head gasket fix the problem?

There is a kit that shows combustion gasses in the coolant. This is
used to detect head gasket leaks; not only does oil get in the
coolant, but combustion gasses as well.
If the car tests positive, walk away, regardless of 39k miles, or how
clean the car is. There are -plenty- of A4's to choose from out
there...
