Make sure you prep well first. Soap water or degreaser spray will get rid 
of all the dirt and grease. Alcohol is the best way to get rid of residue. 
Then maybe a fine sanding will help get rid of surface rust. If you have 
more rust, DuPont makes some pink stuff that turns to a black sealer primer 
on rust, which has worked very well for me. [It's still holding up after I 
used on an window a/c bottom tray which holds lots of water in it]. Then 
spray w/ whatever color you want as long as it's a good engine paint. POR15 
is also something like the pink stuff, but it's sensitive to UV and must be 
topcoated. Older Porsche owners swear by it on their underbodies. Por15 
also makes a very rugged engine paint that's not UV sensitive, so if you 
wanna really make sure it works this time, you might wanna check these guys 
out and maybe ask them questions. Their site is www.por15.com. good luck.
