While I think that the paper clip idea is a *great* one I'll toss in
what I did some three years back on my 5ktq. When I bought the car the
clips were broke and the leather boot torn. I about fainted when Linda
told me the price of a new boot (and the frame with clips was not
available seperately). I bought a used boot from another lister and it
too had broken clips (which I knew when I bought it) but nice leather
(which was why I bought it). I used clear silicon seal (RTV) to bond the
boot in place. I have since had to remove and re-install the boot and
there was no trouble removing it. I have never had a problem with the
boot coming loose (helps to have part/some of the clips still intact)
nor rattling in the three years I have had the car this way. Cheap,
easy, fast...just the way I like these kinds of reapirs to go. You can
not see any evidence of how the boot is secured until you pry it up and
remove it.
I really liked the paper clip idea. I'm just not sure I would go to that
extreme as I have found the silicon seal method to work quite well and
it has stood the test of time (and best of all...there's no way it will
ever rattle).
