Have you run the diagnostics on the IC?  It might help you track the problem
down.  

If I were in your shoes I think that I would begin by removing and
disassembling the IC you now have and reassemble using DeoxIt (or equiv) on
every one of the contact pins as you reassemble.  This is what I plan to do
with the IC in my car to take a shot at resolving the range display
funkiness on my car.  The IC is actually very easily disassembled ... and
there are a lot of electrical connectors that can go bad in there ...

BTW, if anyone knows about the availability of an IC from a 5-speed I would
definitely appreciate hearing about it ... TIA!
