strange groaning from rear of A4Avant

We've had ours for nearly 11 months now, and the only strange sound coming 
from the rear of the car is the gurgling of the gas tank, apparently due to 
the horseshoe shape of it having to fit around the drive shaft.  apparently 
there is some sort of mechanism that sends the gas over to the other side?  
seems like it would just have been easier to have two pickup points.
no suspension related groans to speak of, even with the car heavily laden (in 
and on top) this past week on the yearly trip to the Outer Banks of NC.
